Owner: The City of Staunton, VA Project: Floating Cover / Liner / FloatingBaffles Size: 46,760 SF / 13,056 SF / (1)197’ x 19’,(2)179’ x 19’ Material: 8130XR-3PW Installer: Environmental Fabrics, Inc. The existing reservoir at the city water treatment plant showed map-type cracking in the gunite coating. The city was concerned with leaking and after further inspection the gunite coated earthen reservoir showed signs of leaking. The existing cover, which had been in service for 9 years, was also inspected. Several holes and tears were noted during the underwater inspection. The divers also noted some of the seams were starting to debond. Hayes, Seay, Mattern, & Mattern, Inc. was chosen for the process and civil design. Their choice was to remove the existing cover and replace it with a new cover. A skirt was added on the slopes down to low operating level to prevent the cover from chaffing on the gunite surfaces. The existing reservoir would be recoated with gunite and floating baffles would be added to increase the contact time. The baffle system had to function over a wide range on level fluctuations. This and other plant improvements would increase the plant capacity from 6 million gallons a day to 12 million gallons a day. All products used had to meet NSF approval. The material used for the cover, liner and baffles was 8130 XR-3PW from Seaman Corporation. Environmental Fabrics, Inc. of Gaston, SC was chosen for the geomembrane work on this project. The geomembrane work was started in the fall and was completed on schedule. The cell was placed in operation and the cover, slope liner, and baffles system has functioned as designed with little required maintenance. |
