Murphy-Brown LLC
Project: Floating Cover / Liner / Floating Baffle
Size: 55,857 SF / 273,000 SF / (1) 328’ x 9’
Material: 40 mil HDPE
Installer: Environmental Fabrics, Inc.

A new on-site manure storage lagoon for this swine-finishing farm was required to handle all waste from the finishing barns. The lagoon was designed to hold all liquid waste with a 180-day retention time. Since the permit required the lagoon to have an impermeable liner, both a compacted clay liner and geosynthetic liner were evaluated. A 40 mil HDPE liner was chosen as the most cost effective option.

The owner wanted a small anaerobic digester to supply biogas for use as fuel on site. Since covering the entire lagoon was cost prohibitive, Environmental Fabrics, Inc. of Gaston, SC was consulted on the design of a partial cover. Together with the owner, Environmental Fabrics, Inc. designed a partial cover system to create the required size digester. A baffle was attached to one side of the cover to create an anaerobic digester with the desired retention time.

The performance of the small anaerobic digester has more than met the requirements of the owner. The actual amount of biogas being generated in the anaerobic digester has exceeded the estimated design quantity.

EFI was chosen for all geomembrane work on this project which began in mid-summer and was completed in early fall. Since the lagoon was placed in operation, the liner, cover, and baffle system has functioned as designed with little required maintenance.
