40 West Landfill, Cell 1 Construction
Hagerstown, Maryland 2000
The existing landfill had reached full capacity and had no more room for expansion. This resulted with the county purchasing a large amount of land and constructing a new landfill to receive trash. The project was an extensive undertaking because all facilities of the landfill had to be constructed prior to receiving trash.
After much excavation by the general contractor, the new landfill first cell was constructed, thus requiring the geomembrane liner to be installed and meeting specifications and requirements. The engineer’s design was to install a secondary 60 mil HDPE textured liner directly on the prepared subgrade. A GCL layer was installed over the secondary liner and a primary 60 mil HDPE textured liner was installed over the GCL. A 16 oz. geotextile was installed over the primary liner and under the drainage layer to protect the drainage layer from damaging the primary liner.
Environmental Fabrics, Inc. was selected to install the GCL, double layer of 60 mil HDPE textured geomembrane and 16 oz. geotextile in the first cell at the 40 West Landfill.
Installation commenced in September and was completed ahead of schedule. The landfill began accepting trash in November.
